Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation is challenging, and leads many parents to seek out my help. It’s undoubtedly one of the most overwhelming aspects of parenting, especially during infancy. When the parents are over-tired, literally sleepwalking through out the day, the entire family system tends to fall a part. For example, in my house this morning….Our youngest son who is four, Jadin, decided it was time to wake up at 4am. This is not a typical occurrence anymore, thank goodness. Never the less, not something I look forward to! We started by accessing his “needs”. In a nutshell, we took him to the bathroom, asked if he was hungry, etc. In fact, he was hungry and after a bowl of granola in bed, fell back asleep. He is going through a growing spurt currently, so being hungry in the night makes sense.

We have learned over time (and with seven kids) to try this first, rather than give in to being awake too soon. Regardless, being awakened and up for that 45 minute time period left Jay and I both exhausted this morning. Besides, I couldn't go back to sleep after that!

Here’s what I recommend (other than coffee — which I do recommend, by the way) when you are sleep deprived and kids are home for the day (vs. at school):

If both parents are home, and the schedule allows, take turns with the kids while the other rests in the morning. This is probably the key to achieving balance for the rest of the day!

Get outside and exercise with the kids so that they are active, and so are you! We love to go on a hike so that Jadin can do some exploring while getting his energy out!

Call the babysitter and see if she can fit it in to give you a date night out. That light at the end of the tunnel really helps! And yes, we have one tonight! One hour and counting . . . ..

Keep to a strict rhythm that day with nutritious meals and snacks, and nap or quiet time for the younger children (and you if necessary).

Take a long shower or bath and be sure to stop by at your favorite coffee house for immediate nurturing and sense of self. That quick 15 minute reprieve to grab a latte, and talk to a few other adults waiting in line, can do you a world of good!

Remember, everything is temporary and this too shall pass!
