Soothing Your Colicky Baby

There's nothing as unsettling for you as a crying baby who won't stop.  And, getting your baby to stop crying isn't always as easy as it sounds.

Here are a few tips.....

1. Your baby might have an intolerance to dairy.  This was the case for my oldest daughter, who was colicky.  I was advised by my midwife to stop eating dairy completely ( I breastfed Taylor) which was not an easy task.  It was worth it though, the crying thankfully STOPPED.  This may be the only remedy you need to try!

2. Take your baby outside for a walk.   I find that in a carrier, skin to skin, or swaddled in a receiving blanket works best.

3. Holding your baby firmly, stand on your bed and bounce gently from foot to foot on your mattress.  Be careful though!!!!  Those first weeks after giving birth we moms tend to be a bit off balance!

4. Place your baby in a baby seat or car seat (buckled in of course)  on top of the clothes dryer (keep your hands on the seat); this motion has been known to soothe babies.  Or, rock your baby back and forth in the car seat.  My husband humorously refers to this method as "the human swing".   This has been his job by the way. I've been known to be too exhausted by this time of day to be the human swing!!!

5. Play music that you may have been known to play during the pregnancy.  Your baby will recognize this music and it will be soothing.  I found it helps to slowly dance around the room too.  I remember with Taylor I played  Sade over and over again, and she would instantly stop crying.

6. Holding your baby high up on your shoulder, with a very firm head and bottom support,  walk around.   My husband would do this while watching a baseball game.  Whatever works!

7. Lay your baby down underneath a ceiling fan that's turned on at low speed. Give her a gentle massage with baby oil.  I took a baby massage class when Taylor was an infant and it worked wonders!

8. Take a bath with your baby and nurse her (if you breastfeed).   Otherwise, use a binky or give her a bottle.  Being immersed in the warm water helps to soothe their sensitive tummies and undoubtedly reminds them of the womb.

9. Use white noise, such as the vacuum cleaner or water running in the bathtub or sink while rocking your baby very close to it.

10. Put your baby in front of an aquarium. The bubbling sound from the aerator and the movement of the bubbles is calming.  I learned this trick at my favorite restaurant on Kauai, Kintaro's!  Ryan (our baby at the time) was fussing through dinner and jay took him by the aquarium at the front of the restaurant and he completely stopped.  Of course, this meant jay ate dinner there too!

Whatever you do, don't leave your baby alone to cry it out!    This will only cause more distress for your little one and ultimately for you too!
